_ABILITIES:

Magecraft - A magus and as a magus, her abilities consist of using and understanding magecraft. Rin is capable of controlling and manipulating all five elements, which is considered a rare trait amongst magus. It is mentioned that she has the high potential of becoming powerful magic and is destined to be considered one of the top one hundred ranking magus throughout the history of the Mage’s Associaton.

Jewel Magecraft - Being the successor of the Tohsaka Family, Rin excels in Conversion of power, which allows her to store and transfer prana (magical energy) into objects or in this case, Jewels. These jewels are used for a number of things, such as helping Rin during her time of need. She can morph them into protection barriers and bullets (gandr) to help her fight off any threats. She also has the ability to heal and seal up wounds by transferring prana stored in a jewel into the wounded.

Reinforcement - Reinforcement sorcery, which allows her to strengthen her legs so much that she can run at least one hundred meters in a matter of seconds.

Master - A participant during the Holy Grail War. Rin was able to create and form a pact with a heroic spirit from the past (or in her bizarre case, the future) and have them fight with her as her servant.

Pseudo-Karate Rin practices pseudo-karate as a form of self-defense.

_PERSONALITY:

From birth, a magus is destined for a life of dedication, solitude, and sacrifice. As the sole heir of the Tohsaka bloodline, Rin Tohsaka was no stranger to that lifestyle. A magus’ world is centered around understanding and expanding their knowledge of magecraft. With such dedication, a magus is expected to divide themselves from the rest of the population. This way of life was not only meant to prevent exposure, but to keep their minds focused on their studies. Even something as "family" was no excuse to distract themselves from their true potential. From the beginning of her childhood, Rin's "outer personality" was molded around her fate as the head of the Tohsaka family and her own father's loyalty to magecraft.

In Rin’s eyes, her father Tokiomi, was a great magus who deserved to be loved and respected by many. However, her own childlike naivety and the love she had for her father blinded her from fully comprehending his true nature as a magus and all the negative aspects of it. As an admirable magus, Tokiomi followed the true magus path, placing his own ideals aside, which included being a father to his children. As much as he loved them, his duties couldn't be ignored. His death, due to his involvement in the Fourth Holy Grail War, left tears in his family and forcing Rin into adulthood.

Even after Tokiomi’s death, Rin continued to drive herself into becoming a great magus that her father could be proud of. She structured her own “persona” through her father’s own image and adapted his own ideals for her own. Despite being placed with the burden of becoming the successor, Rin showed a great sense of pride in her heritage and used that as her fuel to go forth with her training to be the greatest magus from her bloodline to date. One of the feats she had set herself up for was winning the Holy Grail. Winning the cup had always been a far off dream for the Tohsaka family and a lifelong dream of her father’s. She believed winning the cup would fulfill her father’s wish and lead her family’s name to victory. As a master from the Fifth Holy Grail War, Rin actually had shown little to no desire for the grail’s wish granting properties and merely stated that her only wish was to win. Rin is ambitious, who is always striving towards her goals despite of the odds against her. She was never a person to admit defeat. She had a role to uphold, failure was not something that she could rest on.

However, a lifestyle of perfection left her little room for enjoying herself as a child. Whenever she wasn’t attending to her studies and strengthening her magical energy, she was running her family estate on her own as she was the only one capable of keeping her head afloat. She had always managed to keep herself from showing any signs of immaturity.

Her perfectionism is carried on at school, where she is nothing less than a well rounded student and is considered an idol amongst her peers. According to Shirou Emiya, a long time admirer of Rin, she is seen as being "unattainable" due to her popularity and formal, yet cold, personality. He wasn’t too far off from the mark. She had a responsibility to uphold and that was to keep people from prying into her private life. To hide her many secrets, she painted her very image to come off as intimidating and unreachable to others. She would often turn down invitations and act dismissive. Her aloof personality steered away any potential of forming any long term relationships with her peers. Rin knew that walls were needed to be built and she couldn’t afford to become too friendly towards others. Hostility was necessary to keep her secrets from being revealed.

Rin is a complex person and if one does manage to slip through her walls, they’ll be pleasantly surprised to find out about her softer side, a side in which she deems “vulnerable.” Deep down, Rin can be quite the caring person and easily placed into the big-sisterly role. Whether she was stepping in to chase off a sniveling Shinji or offering her knowledge to assist Shirou in the Grail War, Rin never hesitates to offer her assistance if needed. Her “true” self also comes with a number of flaws. Shirou, while getting close to Rin, quickly discovers her bad traits and deems her school persona as nothing more than a false image. Behind closed doors, Rin is shown to be short-tempered, loud, bossy, stingy, and somewhat of a slacker. There’s also a mischievous and playful side to her and shows great pleasure in teasing Shirou. Lastly, Rin is also known for her “tsundere” trait. This side of her is highlighted during the Unlimited Blade Works route when her feeling for Shirou becomes more obvious.

Rin is also noted to have a deep rooted sense of honor. While her main focus is winning the grail for herself, she does provide helpful insight for Shirou and sets her own goals aside to pay off her debt to him. In a way, she acts as a sort of mentor, educating and teaching him things that his father, Kiritsugu, neglected to pass on. She is a believer of paying off her debts; however, her actions towards Shirou could also suggest that Rin is a generally nice person.

Guilt also plays a huge role when it comes to her biological sister, Sakura, who was adopted into the Matou Family after Tokiomi picked Rin to carry on the family’s traditions. Due to this, Rin blames herself for abandoning her sister and her guilt is what drove her to revive, as Rin was aware of Sakura’s affections for him. Knowing even the smallest of details about Sakura’s feelings, it’s clear that Rin had always managed to keep a watchful eye on her. Her love for her sister is tested during the finale of the Heaven’s Feel route.

As a part of her heritage, one of her main duties is to watch over and protect Fuyuki City from chaos. During the Heaven’s Feel scenario, Rin is left with the responsibility to sacrifice her sister in preventing the evil within her (the shadow) from causing destruction. Despite the dismissive way she handles it, Rin was actually reluctant to take her sister’s life for the greater good. In a way, this revealed that Rin is not mature as she leads on. In the end, Rin finds the strength within her to admit her true feelings for her sister, and the two rekindle their relationship.

It’s unclear whether or not Rin’s ideals would differ if she came to realize and understand her father’s cold nature, but it is clear that Rin, despite her feelings towards her father, she had her own set of rules to follow. Her personal ideals are what set her apart from other magi. She’s aware that she harbors a personality mirroring her father’s and states that most of her decisions are based on cold, rational logic. She admits it’s not a very cute personality.
